The ‘Silk Route’ was an ancient chain of trade that crossed the vast and vibrant Indian subcontinent, connecting the exotic Far East to markets in the West. “Spices” were an integral part of this network; South India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) were the major sources of this treasured “Black Gold” – including heady cardamom, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg that form the distinctive flavours of the subcontinent.
